Ethics and change / Explainer
Can you build an ethical real estate career?
Yes, you can look for a workplace where fair conduct is part of daily work. Start with practical standards and supervision. An unsupported claim that agents are the “least trusted profession” tells you little about how a particular agency will expect you to behave.

Begin with a file check
Example: a draft advertisement says a room is an approved bedroom, but the employee cannot find supporting information. They flag the claim and ask for it to be checked before publication. This small decision makes the evidence visible.
NSW’s rules of conduct set requirements for property professionals. The regulator’s misrepresentation guidance also explains that misleading conduct can involve silence or leaving out important information, not just an obviously false sentence. Understand the pressure without excusing it
A client may be anxious about a sale. A renter may need a clear repair update. A new employee may worry about disappointing a manager. These pressures help explain why a rushed answer can feel tempting. They do not make an unsupported answer safe.
A practical response is to say what you know, identify what needs checking and give a realistic next step. Avoid promises you cannot control. Keep a record that another team member can understand.
Make the evidence visible
Ask how the agency handles doubt
At an interview, ask who reviews advertising and how staff raise concerns. Ask for an example of a corrected mistake, without requesting private client details. Listen for a process: who decides, what is recorded and how affected people are updated.
A poster about values is useful only if the working system supports those values. Time to check facts, access to current guidance and a supervisor who answers questions are worth asking about.
Check the wider facts
This article does not repeat a profession ranking because no current, directly relevant primary survey has been established for that claim here. Trust surveys can also differ in their question, sample and date. A dramatic headline should not become a career verdict.
Nor can a single positive review prove that an employer is ethical. Look across its stated process, regulator information and the practical answers you receive. Keep uncertainty visible rather than filling it with either praise or suspicion.
Your next step
Prepare three questions about fact-checking, supervision and complaints. Use the answers to compare workplaces. Ethical practice becomes easier to assess when you can see how the agency supports sound decisions under pressure.
