Do you need an expensive car or wardrobe?

Do not buy an expensive car or wardrobe just to look like you belong in real estate. Check the legal entry requirements, the employer’s actual job terms and the costs of doing the work before spending money.

Read the right document

Example: a job advertisement asks for access to a reliable vehicle. That tells you something about this employer’s role. It does not, by itself, establish a licensing rule or a need for a luxury brand.

NSW’s agent licence guidance lists eligibility and authorised work. It is the right place to check that state’s licence requirements. An agency’s dress policy or transport preference is a separate document. Avoid turning one employer’s preference into a national rule. NSW Government, Real estate agent licence

Find out what travel means

Ask how many sites you may visit, whether a pool vehicle exists and whether carrying signs or other equipment is part of the job. Discuss realistic travel time between appointments. A driving licence and the ability to travel safely are separate questions from owning a particular car.

If you will use your own vehicle, ask about the written arrangement, reimbursement, parking and insurance requirements. The Real Estate Industry Award contains vehicle-related provisions, but entitlement depends on the employment arrangement and the relevant clause. Check it rather than guessing from a weekly salary. Keep presentation practical

Ask for the dress policy before shopping. Useful questions include whether the workplace has a uniform, which footwear suits site visits and whether outdoor work needs weather protection. Clean, practical clothing can be planned around the actual tasks and policy.

You should not have to guess an invisible spending target from social media photos. If an outfit or car purchase would strain your budget, get a clear answer first. Looking established is not evidence that someone gives accurate advice or keeps good records.

Compare the whole offer

A role with a higher headline pay figure may also involve more travel or equipment costs. Build a simple list of costs you would personally pay. Include study, licensing, commuting and any required work items, without assuming all costs will be deductible or reimbursed.

Location matters too. A compact office area and a wide rural territory create different transport needs. The practical answer may change between two branches of the same agency.

Your next step

Ask for the position description, transport arrangement and dress policy. Price only the essentials after those details are clear. Choose a job you can perform safely and affordably, with expectations you understand.
