The job title is only the beginning
Fair Work draws an important line inside real estate offices: employees who do only clerical work are generally covered by the Clerks Award, while duties within a real estate classification can lead to different coverage. Two jobs in the same office can therefore need different pay checks. Clerical employees in real estate.
That is a useful clue for choosing a pathway too. “Assistant” tells you less than a list of what you will actually do each day.
Compare the learning opportunities
A reception or administration role may help you practise scheduling, clear messages and record accuracy. Ask whether the job includes only clerical work or any regulated property duties.
A sales-support role may involve preparing material and helping a more experienced agent. Ask which parts you will observe, which you will perform and who checks the work.
A leasing or property-management support role may bring you closer to inspections, enquiries and ongoing property tasks. The work can involve different pressures from a sales campaign. Ask how the team handles urgent issues and competing deadlines.
These are examples of questions to explore, not fixed job descriptions. Employers organise their teams differently.
Compare entry roles by duties
Match the role to your present needs
If you enjoy systems and detail, office support may be a strong place to build confidence. If you want direct client contact, ask how quickly supervised contact forms part of the role. If predictable hours matter, examine the roster rather than assuming a title guarantees them.
There is no shame in choosing a role with a steadier learning pace. A first job can help you discover which part of the industry you actually enjoy.
Check the route beyond the first job
Ask whether the role’s duties can support the experience requirements for the licence you hope to obtain. Do not assume all time spent in an agency counts in the same way.
For example, NSW sets a supervised assistant-agent pathway and requirements for progression. Other states and territories have their own systems. NSW assistant agent pathway.
Jobs and Skills Australia groups several different property occupations together, which is another reason to look beyond the umbrella term “real estate”. JSA occupation profile.
Your next step
Use state and territory student guides to compare duties, required authority, supervision, hours and pay. Choose the role that gives you a sound next step. Progress is easier to judge when you know what you are trying to learn.
