Returning to work as a parent: can real estate fit?
It may fit, but flexibility needs to be checked in the actual role. A promise of “family-friendly work” is less useful than a clear roster, travel plan and agreement about urgent contact. Compare the whole week before choosing training or accepting a job.

Put the week on paper
Example: a parent marks childcare hours, travel time and study sessions on a blank calendar. They then add the employer’s proposed shifts, including an occasional Saturday. A gap becomes visible before anyone relies on a schedule that cannot work.
This is a planning example, not a claim that every parent needs the same arrangement. Families, care options and working preferences differ. You can identify the conditions you need without defending your choice to work.
Ask what flexibility means here
Does the role offer changed start times, fewer days, shared duties or some work from home? Which appointments must happen in person? Who covers a client enquiry when you are not working? Get the answer in practical terms.
Remote work does not automatically remove travel or supervision needs. Part-time work does not automatically mean a full-time workload can be compressed into fewer hours. Ask how the duties change with the schedule.
Make the week visible
Understand the right to request
Fair Work explains that eligible employees can request flexible working arrangements. Parents with responsibility for a school-aged or younger child may qualify after the required service. Eligibility rules also address casual employees, so check the guidance for your situation. A new applicant should not assume the same statutory position as an established employee. For eligible requests, employers must respond in writing within 21 days and follow the required process. A right to request does not guarantee the exact arrangement requested. Negotiation before starting a new role can still be useful. Fair Work Ombudsman, Flexible working arrangements
Check the broader support
Fair Work’s parents and families guidance covers workplace protections and relevant leave information. It is a better source for rights than an informal claim that real estate is always flexible. Fair Work Ombudsman, Parents and families
Childcare availability, travel distances and backup arrangements may affect the plan. So can the agency’s staffing and appointment system. These are planning factors, not a test of how committed a parent is.
Your next step
Take a realistic weekly plan to the job conversation. Ask for the agreed hours, duties, cover and review date in writing. Choose the role on what can actually be supported, while leaving room to review the arrangement when family or workplace needs change.
