Comparing course prices: look at what the fee actually includes

A low headline price needs context. So does an expensive package.

Course value depends on the required units, teaching, assessment, support and written fee terms. Price alone cannot establish quality or whether the course fits your licence pathway.

Start with a written quote

Imagine a course ad shows “$200”. This is a hypothetical example, not a verified current offer or a market benchmark. Before judging it, ask what that amount buys: the full qualification, selected units, an initial payment or an assessment service.

Put the quote beside the course outline. Ask the provider to identify the award, included units and any extra charges. A smaller price for fewer units may be a different product rather than a better deal.

The same care applies to a higher price. Ask what extra service is included and whether you will use it. There is no need to spend more simply because a package sounds premium.

Compare the path to completion

Create a short comparison with space for each provider’s answer:

  • What is the total course fee, and when is each payment due?
  • Are learning materials and all required assessments included?
  • What happens if I need another assessment attempt?
  • How long can I access the course, and what does an extension cost?
  • What trainer help can I use, and at what times?
  • What happens if I withdraw or the provider changes delivery?

ASQA advises students to examine course fit and provider information before enrolling. Use its checklist to fill gaps in the offer. Course-selection guidance

Read the agreement before making a budget

The enrolment agreement should make the commitment clear. Check cancellation terms and any continuing payments after withdrawal. The ACCC explains that contracts cannot remove consumer rights that apply under the law. A refund outcome still depends on the circumstances, so avoid assuming every change of mind leads to a refund. Include costs outside tuition in your own plan. Ask the licensing authority about application charges and documents, and consider equipment or travel you personally need. Do not add guessed figures from another state.

Choose with the unanswered questions visible

A clear, affordable course may suit you well. An offer that cannot explain its scope deserves more questions before payment. Check the issuing RTO on the national register as part of that decision. RTO search

Next step: Use the full-cost questions to compare complete written offers on the same basis, then choose the one that fits your pathway and budget.

Sources and what remains unknown
