Read what the work involves

Jobs and Skills Australia describes work that includes property inspections, listings, client needs and records. Those tasks need clear communication and careful follow-through. They give you a better starting point for an application than simply saying you love houses. JSA Real Estate Sales Agents profile.

You can apply for suitable entry roles without claiming experience you do not have. Whether an employer hires you will depend on the vacancy, your eligibility and the people applying. No course or application script can guarantee an offer.

Translate the experience you do have

If you have worked in a shop, explain a time you listened carefully and solved a customer problem. If you organised a study project, show how you tracked deadlines. If you handled bookings, describe how you checked details and followed up.

Choose two examples you can explain honestly. State what you did, what happened and what you learned. You do not need a glamorous story. A clear example of being reliable is useful evidence.

For a first application, it is normal to feel behind people already in the industry. An entry-level employer is also looking for someone who can take feedback and ask before guessing.

Make a small, relevant application

Prepare a short résumé and a brief note explaining why the actual role interests you. Include your current study or registration status accurately. If you are still completing a requirement, say so and give a realistic update rather than claiming you are licensed.

Licensing rules vary. In NSW, for example, assistant agents need the relevant certificate of registration and supervision. That example must not be copied across every state. NSW assistant agent requirements.

Protect your first learning experience

Ask about training, duties, hours and pay. If asked to do an unpaid trial, check its purpose and length. Fair Work says a lawful unpaid trial must be a necessary, supervised skills demonstration; productive work beyond what is reasonably needed may require pay. Unpaid trials.

Bring questions to an interview: Who checks my work? What should I know by the end of the first month? Which tasks require registration before I begin?
