Plan your NSW Class 2 upgrade before your assistant certificate expires
A four-year certificate gives you time to build skills, but the next licence needs its own plan.

A NSW assistant agent certificate normally lasts four years and cannot be renewed. Plan your qualification, supervised experience and Class 2 application well before its expiry date.
Start with the date on your certificate
NSW Fair Trading says an assistant agent who does not progress within the four-year term must stop working as an assistant agent. They cannot apply for another certificate for 12 months after expiry. This makes the date on your own certificate more useful than a general course completion estimate. Assistant agent requirements
There was a one-off extension process for an earlier group in 2024. Its application window is historical. Do not treat an old article about that extension as a current option. If your record is unusual, ask Fair Trading about your particular certificate. The 2024 extension announcement
Two parts of the NSW upgrade
Separate study from work evidence
For the usual Class 2 real estate pathway, NSW requires at least 12 months holding an assistant certificate and supervised experience, alongside the required qualification. Finishing a course alone does not complete every licensing step. Class 2 requirements
Ask your supervisor early how your experience will be recorded and checked. Keep a personal list of completed units, results still pending and work evidence still needed. If your role changes, review whether your new duties will help you complete the required experience.
It can feel hard to study after a busy day in an agency. A realistic plan should account for that. Choose regular study time that you can sustain, and leave room for feedback and reassessment. A plan based only on the fastest advertised course time may have little room for an ordinary setback.
Check your annual obligations too
Assistant agents must complete at least three relevant Certificate IV units in each CPD year. The regulator explains carry-forward arrangements for extra units and the records you must keep. Check those rules against your own progress rather than assuming the minimum annual pace will finish every requirement in time. NSW CPD guidance
Work backwards from the outcome
Put five items on one page: certificate expiry, remaining study, assessment time, supervised evidence and application preparation. Ask the RTO for a realistic completion plan. Ask your supervisor to identify missing experience. Ask the regulator to resolve any unclear requirement.
If your expiry is close, contact Fair Trading promptly. Course enrolment or a pending application should not be assumed to extend permission to work.
Next step: Use the NSW student guide to build a dated upgrade plan, then check it with your supervisor.
