RPL for real estate: how to have your experience properly assessed
Relevant experience can count when the evidence meets the requirements of the units.

Recognition of prior learning is a legitimate assessment process. An assessor must check your skills and knowledge against course requirements; paying a fee or listing years in a job does not establish competence.
Begin with evidence you already have
ASQA explains that RPL can draw on work samples, training records and employer references. A qualified assessor compares the evidence with the course requirements and may identify areas needing further training. Credit transfer is different: it uses formal evidence of units already completed. RPL and credit transfer explained
That is encouraging if you have useful experience and do not want to repeat learning unnecessarily. It also gives you a concrete first step: ask which units might match your actual work.
RPL is an assessment
Connect each claim to something you can show
Create a draft evidence list. For each task, note what you did, when you did it, what records exist and who could verify your role. Ask the assessor what is relevant before gathering a large bundle.
Protect confidential information. Do not upload client identity documents, financial details or agency records simply because a generic checklist asks for “work samples”. Check your permission to share and ask whether a redacted example, demonstration or another form of evidence can meet the requirement.
The goal is to make your skills clear without creating a new privacy problem.
Expect a conversation and an assessment
Ask who will assess you, how the evidence maps to units and whether demonstrations or follow-up questions are needed. Ask what happens if only some units are recognised, what extra training costs and how to appeal an outcome.
ASQA’s RPL practice guide focuses on reliable assessment and suitable evidence. A promise of a guaranteed qualification before the assessor checks your skills should prompt careful questions. RPL practice guide
Check the licensing outcome separately
Recognition by an RTO does not remove your state’s occupational requirements. Confirm the exact units and any rules affecting the evidence accepted for registration. If you are relying on experience gained interstate or overseas, explain that context at the start.
Keep a copy of the assessment plan, evidence you were allowed to share, feedback and final result. If you have a qualification that was cancelled, do not assume it can support credit transfer; ask about a proper assessment of current skills instead.
Next step: Use the Australia student guide to prepare questions for an authorised RTO and decide whether assessment, gap training or a standard course is the best next step.
